Elizabeth Smelt (1695-1750), who married Cornelius Cayley (1692-1779), the Recorder of Hull, descended from King Edward III.
This page records the descent from Edward III to Elizabeth Smelt. It relies upon several sources. The links for individuals in this line go to Wikipedia pages with biographies for the people who are named, which corroborate these connections and link to underlying sources.
For individuals not notable enough to be included in Wikipedia, I relied upon the underlying sources, most notably the Internet Archive copy of “Pedigrees of the county families of Yorkshire: Foster, Joseph, 1844-1905.”
- Pedigree of Cayley, of Brompton, Wydale, etc.
- Pedigree of Cholmeley, of Brandsby Hall, Boynton, Whitby, Howsham, etc.
A note on pronunciation:
Many of the names in this line are of French origin but have distinctly English pronunciations:
- Beaufort is pronounced BOE-fort (though apparently in some areas it is sometimes BOW-fort, the first part rhyming with the front part of a ship)
- Beauchamp is pronounced BEECH-um.
- Cholmondely (Cholmeley, other variants) is pronounced CHUM-lee.

Barbara Cholmley’s exact birth date is unknown, but is roughly c. 1575-1581. Her parents were Henry Cholmley and Margaret Babthorpe.
Barbara is part of the proven maternal lineage from King Richard III’s mother Cecily Neville to Michael Ibsen. This lineage and mitochondrial DNA testing of Ibsen and the skeletal remains of Richard III proved that those remains were Richard III. She and all of her maternal ancestors are shared with Michael Ibsen.
She married Thomas Belasyse…
