Gabriel (Kaapo) Hujanen (1750-1831)

(Note: This text is copied and then revised from the entry at Wikitree, which I also wrote. That page has detailed sources.)

Gabriel Olofsson Hujanen (Finnish Kaapo Ollinpoika Hujanen) was born in Hatala, Kuopio, Finland on 2 February 1750. His parents were Olof Hujanen (1701-1801) and Walborg Hilduin (b. 1701).

He was listed in communion records in Lappetelä (farm 8) for the period 1748-1771 with his birth year listed as 1748. Communion records there and later in Wiita, Iisalmi consistently list his birth year as 1748, but the baptism record is clearly 1750.

On 24 June 1780 he married Anna Nilsdotter Huttuin and moved to her family farm in Wiita, Iisalmi. (This move established the Hujanens in Wiita for the first time, continuing to the present day nearly 250 years later.) Their children were Nils (1782), Olof (1784), Johan (1787), Elisabeta (1790), and Walborg (1800).

Gabriel’s farm was eventually called “Wiita 2” and then “Wiita 3.” It seems like the same farm continued under a different numbering. By 1827 the associated name “Pitkäkoski” was recorded for the first time and is still associated with the area.

Gabriel died 24 March 1831 in Pitkäkoski.
